Teaching and Discipleship

Stories OF Life, Stories FOR Life: The Parables of Jesus

Parables are a "lens that allows us to see the truth and to correct distorted vision." This year we will learn from Jesus' Parables of Grace and Responsibility, Parables of Lostness, Parables of the Present Kingdom, and Parables about Discipleship, and more. Come! Listen to Jesus tell stories. Together we will seek to receive his
life-giving challenge to see clearly and to live accordingly!

Beautiful Sayings, Hard Words: The Beatitudes
Becoming who God created us to be requires more than a self-determined, try-harder grit.
Jesus shows us the way to this good goal for the soul.  We need the Potter's hands on the clay of our hearts and
minds so that the whole of our lives bears an unmistakable likeness to the One who formed us.
Beautiful Sayings, Hard Words: The Beatitudes is a nine-week encounter with the familiar and challenging words of Jesus from Matthew 5. When, with courage, these are taken in and allowed to mess with our status quo,
God's transforming touch will be surprisingly and gloriously evident among his people as we
continue to become who He created us to be.

Vine, Vision & Voice (VVV)
is a one-of-a-kind 12 week Christian formation learning experience. Since 2002, Nancy has led groups
of 8-20 women through VVV in local churches and at Denver Seminary.

VVV draws upon each participant's longing for deepening life with God, and engages their God-given creativity.
VVV is a progressive and integrated series which includes both large- and small-group interaction,
teaching, fellowship, healing prayer, and individualized creative activities, all done with a view
to becoming who God created us to be and learning to abide in the Vine.
The Twelve-week class includes:

Life With Christ ─ Digging Deeper Together
The Language of Christian spiritual formation is familiar. But, what does it mean?
“Yes, I want a rich and full life with Christ. But, what is it − really? How do I do it − practically?  Will someone help me get beyond the language of formation to the substance?"

The substance of Life with Christ has to do with experience. It is an integration of what we know in our minds and what we experience in our day-to-day lives and hearts. Life With Christ − Digging Deeper Together brings Jesus' guidance from the Sermon on the Mount and unique models of the Christian Formation process
to bear upon one's actual experience of Life With Christ.

The first semester includes:

The second semester includes:

So we pray:
"Holy Spirit, may the eyes of our hearts be opened to see and know 'where you are moving' within us personally and within your church. May our hearts have the courage to wonder – that we might experience Jesus in that which is both familiar and new all at the same time."

What People Are Saying about VVV

Having completed VVV with Nancy, I see the eternal value of a content-based spiritual formation experience. Growth takes place the best when truth is taught and experienced in an intimate community setting.  ~ Debbie

VVV provided me with relevant content and an environment to process and let God speak to me about Himself and about me.  I believe this experience has been the most spiritually beneficial experience during seminary if not my entire Christian life.  ~ Ann

VVV takes you back to the heart of your faith as a Christian.  For me, it was a refreshing and necessary process that allowed me to grow in creative ways that reached deeper parts of my soul.  ~ Kristin

What I loved about VVV was the freedom I experienced during each session – freedom from religiosity, freedom from appearances, freedom from those thoughts and feelings that serve to stifle creativity.  In that freedom I was able to take an honest look at the needs of my heart, and then bring those needs to the only One who can truly satisfy them – Jesus Christ.  ~ Erin

For me, VVV gave me a space unlike another time or experience I have had throughout seminary.  It allowed me intentional time to let God work – even two hours of this space each week had incredible significance for me. ~ Mikkin

Too often, Christians don’t give God the opportunity to teach us through creativity.  The Holy Spirit can work in so many ways if we just open up our hands for him to work through our creativity.  VVV gave me the opportunity to allow God to teach me while sculpting or drawing and it was an amazing experience.  ~ Beth

Thanks again for all of the work you put into VVV.  It was one of the best things I've done in a long time, and I'm thankful to you and to the Lord for the opportunity to hear about it and participate.  You set the tone early on for a safe place to be in process with God and all that He's doing for, in and through each of us. You have encouraged me spiritually, emotionally and practically more than you'll ever know!  ~ Penny

A clearer understanding of the character of God, the work of Christ and the empowerment of the Spirit was woven throughout the study.  I gained a clearer sense of how God spiritually forms me and how the Holy Spirit works in me to allow growth to happen. ~ Amy

Our group bonded instantly.  It included women from all walks of life which was so nice.  I’m 26 and loved hearing insights from women who were older than me.  We learned much from one another.  The community was biblically accurate – allowing the “older women to teach the younger women.”  In many churches this does not happen. ~ Robyn

The sacred readings/writings as well as the discussions were invaluable.  There was a high value on God's word as truth in the teaching, prayers, and overall direction of the class. ~ Penny

Laughter, tears, gifts and warts all openly shared, allowed me to feel safe with this group.  It wasn’t all ‘la-de-dah’ times that were shared, and yet through experiences such as group contemplative prayer, the power of HIS generous blessings came through and were spoken from our hearts . . . for Him and for each other.   ~ Deb

The community was comfortable, and open, and your leadership was never to dominate, but rather, encouraged us to share our burdens and joys.  The most powerful piece for me was how God used this study to minister to me at a time that was difficult. ~ Gari

I was shy at first, yet I felt the space created was very safe for sharing.  I never felt that I would be shot down for an answer or looked down upon.  This group of women is great but the atmosphere that was created via creativity and your guidance was what made it possible for us to become so vulnerable with each other. ~ Angie

I find myself more aware of deepening my relationship with Him to serve Him as a parent – a shift to ‘it’s not about me,’ and a renewed appreciation of ‘it IS all about serving Him!’ and discerning how he provides.  Letting go – it is getting to be an easier process for me to surrender. ~ Deb

VVV has a strong theological component that many regular church attendees somehow have missed.  I’ve been attending church all my life. There were many “aha” moments for me. ~ Robyn

The nature of being formed in Christlikeness and the tools for the journey were experienced and reiterated through the lessons again and again.   I wish every Christian could take VVV and be taught these tools.  We all need to be able to talk about and process the way we are being formed into Christlikeness.  So many don’t get it and are missing out on Life and on God’s purposes for us.  ~ Angie

I LOVED this time with you and the others.  God used you in a mighty way in each of our lives because it is powerfully life changing. ~ Penny

The Lord has used you to sojourn with me in my walk of faith. The Lord graciously brought you into my life at a time when I was so hungry to connect heart to heart with women who longed to grow in their intimacy with God and personal holiness. Through Vine Vision and Voice you invested in me for over a year, offering godly wisdom, and asking the questions my spirit needed to hear. I appreciate your willingness to give of yourself sacrificially  in order to bless me and others from the wealth our Lord has revealed to you. You have generously shared the love and truth of God. Your insight and spiritual discernment have helped me and many others to see our God and ourselves more accurately and honestly. So I thank you for coming alongside me in this amazing process of spiritual transformation. ~ Patty
